As recently announced, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has started replacing the NEXUS kiosks at Canadian airports to serve you better.

How the new kiosks will save you time
• The new kiosks use facial verification and are user-friendly.
• Ability to quickly tap your NEXUS card at the kiosk when prompted.
• Simplified reporting process (including fewer screens to complete than the old kiosks).
• You can now use the kiosks in groups.
Tips to make your first time using the new kiosks quick and easy
• Before your next trip, please make sure that your NEXUS card is activated by logging into the Trusted Traveler Programs application portal. Every NEXUS card needs to be activated, even renewal and replacement cards.
• Once you arrive at the airport, you may be asked to scan your passport at the kiosk so that your photo can be added to your NEXUS membership profile. Please have your passport ready and follow all on-screen instructions.
New declaration process
• Declarations will not be completed at the new kiosks. If you have something to declare you must do so verbally, to an officer, at a clearly marked area in the customs hall after using the kiosk.

How the CBSA is protecting your privacy
The CBSA is committed to ensuring your privacy as a NEXUS member is upheld. The security and privacy of personal information has been factored into all elements of the kiosk design. Your personal information, including your passport photograph, will not be stored on the kiosk. The only information retained is saved securely on CBSA systems, in accordance with government information, privacy and security policies. All information is used strictly to confirm your identity on arrival to Canada.

Where the new kiosks are available
• Vancouver International Airport
• Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport
• Halifax Stanfield International Airport
• Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport
• Edmonton International Airport

Coming soon!

Over the next few months, the NEXUS kiosks at the airports below will be replaced with new kiosks:
• Toronto Pearson International Airport
• Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport
• Calgary International Airport
• Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport

Visit the CBSA’s NEXUS Air website for more information, including the step-by-step process for using the new kiosks. Our website will be regularly updated as the new kiosks are installed at the above airports.

Thank you for your patience as we modernize the NEXUS program to save you even more time at the border.

Sincerely,
Traveller Programs Directorate
Canada Border Services Agency

Bonjour,

Travelers to Canada -Facing Inadmissibility for non-compliance to Mandatory Quarantine Rules

New regulations for employers of temporary workers under the International Mobility Program (IMP)

The Government of Canada is working closely with partners in Canada and around the world, including the World Health Organization, to respond to the current outbreak of corona virus disease (COVID-19).

Like everyone in Canada adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic, employers and workers are expected to follow the latest public health and safety requirements and guidance from the Government of Canada, and from their respective provincial/territorial and local authorities, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

To further support these efforts, the Government has created new requirements for International Mobility Program employers of temporary workers. These amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations create new conditions for foreign nationals and employers to ensure they comply with federal, provincial and territorial efforts to protect public health and impose consequences on those who fail to follow the new requirements.

For instance, a worker who fails to follow a mandatory 14-day quarantine period can now become inadmissible to Canada. For employers, non-compliance can result in penalties under the existing employer compliance regime, including administrative monetary penalties and/or bans on hiring foreign workers in the future.

New mandatory conditions for International Mobility Program employers

• You must not prevent a temporary worker from complying with orders and regulations made under the Quarantine Act, or with provincial laws regulating public health in response to COVID-19. This includes requiring a worker to do anything that is contrary to those requirements.

• You must pay wages that are substantially the same as offered in the offer of employment during the period of mandatory quarantine when the worker first arrives in Canada, as per the current Quarantine Act order, even if the worker is unable to perform any work.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, officers at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will conduct inspections for compliance with these new conditions. Officers may contact you via electronic means and/or by telephone to initiate an inspection, or to request additional information. The inspection process may be complemented by phone interviews with you and, separately, with workers. It is essential that your contact information is up to date in the Employer Portal. Inspections can be launched up to 6 years after you have employed a temporary worker.

Please note that if the position offered is no longer available, you should advise your foreign employee to wait to travel to Canada until the position is available.

To minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19, we encourage you and your employees to continue to be diligent in following public health orders and guidance. We recognize that these are challenging times and that the cooperation of employers like you is vitally important in keeping Canada safe and Canadians and temporary foreign workers healthy.

For more information on the International Mobility Program, including these new requirements, please visit the IRCC website.

U.S. - Canada Border closure is extended to June 21, 2020.

"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government is looking into possible tweaks to the current Canada-U.S. border restrictions that could allow immediate families to reunite. [...]

The border between Canada and the U.S. has been closed to all non-essential or “discretionary” travel since mid-March in response to the pandemic, resulting in families being separated for more than two months now. The latest extension on the restrictions is in effect until June 21 at least.

The agreement, as it stands, exempts the flow of trade and commerce, as well as vital health-care workers such as nurses who live and work on opposite sides of the border. Tourists and cross-border visits remain prohibited. It’s likely that should this policy change go ahead, the 14-day quarantine upon arrival in Canada would still need to occur for these family members."

whose ceremonies have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic may soon be able to take the oath of citizenship virtually.

In a statement sent to CBC News, Canada’s federal government said it will start “to implement virtual citizenship ceremonies […] as quickly as possible.”

The first online ceremonies will be available to those who “have a pressing need for Canadian citizenship” as well as those who had previously been scheduled to take the oath in person and whose events were cancelled due to special measures that were implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) temporarily cancelled all citizenship ceremonies and tests more than two months ago as part of a myriad of special measures introduced in response to the global pandemic. At that time, the government stated that these events would be rescheduled “in the near future” and did not provide a date for their reoccurrence. It also stated that those affected by the cancellations would be given a new date and time in the coming weeks.

This announcement by IRCC is yet another positive development for prospective immigrants as well those already in Canada and whose lives have been in limbo since mid-March.

IRCC said in the statement the virtual citizenship events would be designed to “protect the integrity of the legal process and reflect the importance of the occasion” and would soon be scheduled. No further details have been made public yet and no timetable has been set.

A slowdown of immigration to Canada due to the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to derail a major source of economic and labour force growth, according to a report from the Royal Bank of Canada.
The shortfall jeopardizes the ability of the country to find employees needed in sectors such as health and elder care as the baby boom generation moves into retirement over the next few years, the report says.

"Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Marco E. L. Mendicino, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair and Health Minister Patty Hajdu today announced that, in addition to the border restrictions that remain in place, the Government of Canada is further strengthening the public health presence at the border and enhancing quarantine monitoring. The government is also increasing the use of digital forms and processes to allow critical information to be shared more quickly with provinces and territories. In addition, a process is being introduced to support enhanced family reunification, including those in long-term exclusive relationships, international students and entry for compassionate reasons."

Temporary public policy to facilitate the granting of permanent residence for French-speaking foreign nationals in Canada, outside of Quebec

"As a result of the pandemic, attention has been placed on the ongoing need to fill certain essential occupations. By granting permanent resident status to those with French language proficiency and experience in these occupations, Canada will be leveraging Francophone immigration outside of Quebec, to help stabilize this workforce both for pandemic recovery and into the future. In addition, these existing French-speaking temporary foreign workers have made a contribution to Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic and in some cases face difficulty in qualifying and applying for permanent residence. The public policy responds directly to this contribution and these challenges by implementing measures that create a temporary pathway to permanent residence."

"The Public Health Agency of Canada has been monitoring case data, and through mandatory testing upon entry into Canada, has detected a disproportionally higher number of cases among individuals travelling on flights originating from India and Pakistan. Given the high number of cases, the Government of Canada has taken additional measures:

Transport Canada has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to suspend all commercial and private passenger flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days, effective 23:30 EDT April 22, 2021.
The Minister of Transport will amend the Interim Order Respecting Certain Requirements for Civil Aviation Due to COVID-19, which means for passengers who depart India or Pakistan to Canada after 23:30 EDT April 22, 2021, via an indirect route, they will need to obtain a negative COVID-19 pre-departure test from a third country before continuing their journey to Canada.

These measures will help manage the elevated risk of imported cases of COVID-19 and variants of concern into Canada during a time of increasing pressure on our health care system."

Canada updates proof of funds requirement for Express Entry 2021

https://blog.y-axis.com/canada-updates-proof-of-funds-requirement-for-express-entry-2021/

"The Canadian government has updated the amount of money required for settling in Canada.

In order to remain eligible for the Express Entry system, an individual might have to update the settlement fund numbers in their Express Entry profile with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC].

The update of settlement funds in an existing IRCC Express Entry profile must be made no later than July 15, 2021.

In case an update is required and subsequently made by a Canada immigration hopeful, the update will not affect the date and time of receiving the profile. Thereby, retaining their ranking in the event of a tie-break situation in future."
