Work Permits for Skilled Workers Providing Repairs Due to Emergency or Out-of-Warranty Service
A temporary work permit can be requested on behalf of foreign workers by a Canadian business or employer when they require a need for foreign workers with specific skills and knowledge to perform repairs on industrial or commercial equipment which original manufacturer is not present in Canada and the equipment is no longer under warranty or covered by an after-sales or lease agreement.
If the work required is urgent in nature, and the applicants are entering Canada to perform emergency repair, the work permit may be issued for a short duration. If the workers sought will be performing routine repairs for out-of-warranty equipment the work permit is normally valid for less than 30 calendar days. This is a LMIA-exempt category because Canadian jobs may be greatly affected if the equipment is not repaired or maintained in a timely fashion especially if preventative work would have a negative impact on productivity and the revenue of a company. Applicants destined to work in Québec do not require a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) as they are LMIA-exempt.
